Lesson 6 - Im Reisebüro
Lesson 7 moves us to a different tense - the narrative past. Often this tense is called the simple past or Präteritum in German. As you can tell from the name, the Präteritum is only used in the written word. Germans draw a distinct line between the past used in conversation and the past used in writing.
For our vocabulary this unit, we will continue with the theme of travel and focus on the travel agency. For your project this unit, you will be combing the vocabulary of travel and the Präteritum to write your first German paper.
Objectives:
1. Students will create sentences using travel vocabulary.
2. Students will create a scipt using travel vocabulary.
3. Students will change present tense sentences into the past.
4. Students will create a narrative in the Präteritum, describing a past trip.

Activity 1 - Vokablen
This vocabulary section is short, since the grammar section is much more invovled. This particular vocabulary focuses on a travel agency and requests for different types of vacations. Though it is more common to use the internet for discovering information about places to visit and finding the best deal to book your vacation, people still use a travel agent to help plan vacations. Travel agents often have access to special discounted prices and vacations packages. Read through the vocabulary below. Practice your pronunciation and the definitions. When finished, attempt the crossword and then move to the assignment and quiz.

Activity 1 - Reisebüro Assignment
For this assignment, you will need to create a Google Doc. Be sure to title the document with the assignment name and to type your name on the document. Share the Google Doc with me when you are finished. This assignment is a little different from those we have done in the past. You are going to create a script as if you were seeking information from an employee at a travel agency. You will be requesting information for a trip you will be taking. Remember to use the correct form of you (Sie). Here are some suggestions for your script: 1. Does the employee (Angestellte) have any suggestions for a vacation? 2. What are you interested in seeing? 3. Are there any specials (Sonderangebot)? 4. How much does the trip cost and how long is the trip? 5. Are there any particular sights you wish to see? 6. How is the weather there? The script needs to contain a minimum of 4 exchanges between you and the employee. An exchange must be a minimum of 1 full and complete sentence or question. You must include 10 new vocabulary words in the script. |

Activity 2 - Regular Verbs in the Simple Past
Germans utilize the simple past in writing, which is why it is often called the narrative past tense. The official German name of this tense is the Präteritum. Like the Perfekt, there is a distinction between regular and irregular verbs. Those verbs that we have learned as irregular, stay the same throughout. To compare the simple past to English, is the ed form. For example: we danced, he played, she traveled.
Rules for Präteritum
1. All verbs in the Präteritum are in the standard second position.
2. There are no helping verbs in Präteritum.
Changing Regular Verbs
The rules for changing regular verbs to their simple past forms is relatively easy. Below are the specific steps for changing the verbs to their past tense forms.
1. Remove the (e)n
2. Add te to the end of the verb
3. Conjugate the verb for the subject
The are a few specific points to note before moving towards the conjugation of the verbs.
1. Separable prefixes will separate from the verb and will go to the end of the sentence, like the present tense.
2. If the stem ends in a d or t, you will have to add an extra e before the te ending. Also, remember that regnen follows this rule.
For example: regnete, redete
Conjugation
Like the modal verbs, there is no ending for the ich and er, sie, es forms. All other forms have the standard endings. Notice that the wir and sie, Sie forms do not list the e as a part of the en ending. The reason for that is simple, the past tense ending is te and you will not add an extra e.
ich nothing wir n
du st ihr t
er, sie, es nothing sie, Sie n
Practice
Change the following verbs to the correct past tense forms. Check your answers below.
1. besuchen
2. reisen
3. besichtigen
4. landen
5. packen

1. Die Jungendlichen machten die Hauseaufgaben. (The teenagers did the homework.)
2. Es schneite nicht im Dezember. (It did not snow in December.)
3. Putztest du dir die Zähne? (Did you brush your teeth?)
Rules for Präteritum
1. All verbs in the Präteritum are in the standard second position.
2. There are no helping verbs in Präteritum.

Activity 2 - Regular Verbs Assignment
For this assignment, you will need to create a Google Doc. Be sure to title the assignment with the correct assignment name and to add your name to the document. When you are finished, share the document with me. You will take the following paragraph and will rewrite it using the narrative past tense. Make sure you identify the verbs first, before changing them to the simple past. All verbs are regular. Pay particular attention to the conjugation of the verbs. Die zwei Freunde machen eine Ferien zusammen. Sie besuchen die Tante von Hans. Die Tante wohnt in Freiburg und arbeitet bei einem Reisbüro. Die Freunde reisen nach Freiburg am Samstag. Es regnet viel. Am Sonntag spielen die Freunde Fußball. Am Montag besichtigen sie ein Schloss. Am Dienstag segelt Hans mit seiner Tante. Am Mittwoch reisen die Freunde nach Hause. |

Activity 3 - Irregular Verbs in the Simple Past
Irregular verbs in the Präteritum are a little different than the regular verb. There are no endings added to the verb stem, instead there are vowel changes in the majority of verbs. Verb placement is still the same (2nd position), as well as the conjugation chart. Below are the steps for changing irregular verbs to the past tense.
Irregular Forms
1. Remove the (e)n
2. Change the vowel
3. Conjugate the verb
4. Separable prefixes will separate and go to the end of the sentence
Example:
1. kommen = komm
2. komm (o to a) = kam *it loses an m
Separable Prefix Verb
1. mitkommen = mitkomm
2. mitkomm (o to a) = mitkam
3. Conjugated depending on subject
4. mitkam = kam mit
Conjugation
The conjugation of irregular verbs in the Präteritum is the same as regular verbs in the Präteritum.
ich nothing wir n
du st ihr t
er, sie, es nothing sie, Sie n
With the vowel changes, you will notice that there are patterns between the Perfekt tense and the Präteritum. Eventually, you will memorize the patterns and the changes. Until then, we will be referencing the past tense chart we have already been working with. You will add a column to our original list and add the additional verbs. Using programs like verbix.com will help you find forms that you might be looking for. If you notice the vocabulary list, they contain new changes as well. For instance, look at: steigen (stieg, ist gestiegen) Steigen is the infinitive form. Stieg is the Präteritum. Ist gestiegen is the Perfekt. These forms will only be listed for irregular verbs. If no forms are listed, then it is safe to assume that the verb is regular.
Mixed Verbs
These verbs take both a stem vowel change and the regular te ending. Since they have a vowel change, it is best to memorize them together with the irregular verbs. There are not many of these verbs, so they are an easy group to memorize.
bringen - brachte
kennen - kannte
rennen - rannte
wissen - wusste
Examples
Ich kannte den Schüler. - I knew the student.
Wir fuhren nach Österreich.
Flogst du nach Amerika?

Irregular Verb List
For a reference to use throughout the rest of your time in German, use this list of irregualr verbs. Make sure you add new verbs to the list each for each lesson. One of the important points to note is that separable prefix verbs do not affect the form of the verb. Once you understand the form of verb you can use it with any prefix. I have added separable prefix verbs, just for reference, but you can choose not to. For example: Wir kamen spät. (We came late.) Wir kamen mit. (We came along.) Irregular Verb List |

Lesson 7 - Summary
Wow! We are nearly finished. This has been a fantastic lesson and a chance for your to really show your skills with German. It always feels like an impossible task to create a paper, but you did it with ease.
This lesson focuses on travel and the simple past. Remember, to create the simple past of regular verbs you remove the en and add a te. We must conjugate the verb as well. The conjugation chart is the same as what we have learned with modal verbs. There is no ending in the ich and er, sie, es forms. This same chart is used with irregular verbs, where you conjugate the stem. The major difference between irregular and regular is that there is no te ending with irregular verbs. Instead there is a vowel change. These must be memorized. To help with this process, you have a chart to use as a reference.
Our next unit takes a little from what we have already learned and focuses on modal verbs used in the simple past. As well, we will begin on of my favorite units - die Tiere (animals). So zuerst die Arbeit und dann das Vergnügen!
